EV Star
GreenPower Motor Company produces a full suite of high-floor and low-floor all-electric medium and heavy-duty vehicles. Their flagship vehicle is the EV Star Cab & Chassis platform, which is able to accommodate a variety of bodies and upfits for a variety of applications. The platform's design philosophy of clean sheets allows for optimal battery pack placement and lower center of gravity, resulting in higher payload to range ratios.
The EV Star REEFERX is designed to meet the needs of mid-to-last mile refrigerated delivery and catering applications. The refrigerated trucks in class 4' one interior wall structure and higher insulation than conventional trucks, enable seamless sanitation and better temperature control. They also have a longer service life. The EV Star REEFERX delivers superior cargo capacity and an industry leading payload to range ratio for zero emission passenger transport and goods.
GreenPower has partnered with Perrone Robotics in order to equip the EV Star with TONY (To navigate you) autonomous vehicle systems. This will enable fleets to easily move to autonomous vehicles. The AV Star will also be able to support wireless charging up to 75 kW.
We were able to test drive the EV9 on an unpaved highway for several hours, and found it to be easy to drive, and comfortable to drive for long distances. The ride is smooth over bumps and ruts, while the EV9 is a master of suppressing road noise and wind on the highway. The acceleration is extremely quick and the vehicle has adjustable regenerative braking that allows "one pedal driving" by simply taking off the accelerator.
The EV9 has excellent range and can be fully charged within three hours at home or with any commercial charger. Drivers can select between two modes of operation: eco mode and sports mode. Eco mode focuses on torque and cruise control and the sport mode maximizes speed and handling. Both are a lot of fun to drive and offer a unique driving experience for anyone who has never driven an electric vehicle before.
In addition to the EV9, GreenPower has several other e-vehicle offerings including a multi-purpose electric mini bus called the EV Star. The EV Star is ADA-compliant and can be used for executive shuttles, transit or microtransit vanpools, buses, or paratransit vehicles.
GreenPower produces about 10 EV Star buses per month for Jacksonville Transit Authority. The Jacksonville Transit Authority is replacing their fleet of diesel vehicles with 100 electric vehicles. With the Biden Administration planning to electrify schools across the nation, GreenPower plans on ramping production to meet demand. Their EV Star bus is the first of its kind to be Altoona-tested and FMVSS-certified. Buy America compliant and ADA compliant. This means they will be eligible for federal transit assistance grants. Check back as we follow the AV Star on its demonstration tour later in the year. We will be sure to provide more information on this innovative EV!
